The record
A trumpeter often overshadowed by his peers gets a rare unhurried showcase here, all warm tone and unforced lyricism on ballads and blues alike. Flanagan's touch and the Chambers-Taylor pulse make for a session as understated and durable as its title promises.
Session personnel
- Paul Chambers — bass
- Art Taylor — drums
- Tommy Flanagan — piano
- Kenny Dorham — trumpet
Contemporary reception
On his first record date as lone soloist (with rhythm), Dorham’s playing bears out even more so than on any previous dates that he is one of the more important trumpet players of the decade and continually growing in skill. He works intelligently, using well-thought out statements, never rushing into something blindly in a burst of quick useless notes. He is a thinker! Rhythm section is hard to beat — Paul Chambers, Art Taylor and Tommy Flanagan. The tunes are “Alone Together,” “Old Folks” and “I Had the Craziest Dream” among others. Give it a good listen.
Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1960 US New Jazz mono, NJLP 8225. Everything after it is reissue -- a long line of Japanese Prestige pressings, then Fantasy's OJC-250 in 1986. The audiophile options are unusually strong: Analogue Productions cut a 45 RPM AJAZ 8225 in 2004 and a 200-gram NJLP 8225 in 2017, and the Electric Recording Co. did limited mono and stereo editions in 2018 as ERC042M and ERC042S.
