A quartet date pairing Turrentine's thick tenor tone with Smith's churning keys, the guitar clean and sparing against loose brush work underneath. Cut the same day as its sister session, just as unhurried.

Contemporary reception
Kicking off with an easy tempo reading of “Midnight Special,” Jimmy Smith’s groovin’ organ sets the pace for the other compelling sounds in this collection of jazz favorites. Aided by Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums Smith launches into one of his own compositions “A Subtle One,” which comes off as compatible, tasteful blending of the ensemble’s talents. LP gives proof positive of Smith’s stature as a significant jazz artist.
Pressings
Mono BLP 4078 and stereo BST-84078 both date to 1961, both with RVG stamps and Plastylite ears, and the mono is the deep groove copy. The 45-1819 entries are singles, not this album. Reissues start in 1966 and never really stop. For sound, the 2010 Analogue Productions 45 RPM, AP-84078, and the 2023 Blue Note 5523659 are both Kevin Gray remasters.
