The record
A tight quintet date pairing Frank Wess's warm tenor with Thad Jones's angular brass wit, cut in early '63 with Gildo Mahones, Buddy Catlett, and Roy Haynes driving things with easy swing. Status Records gave it a low-key release, but the front-line chemistry between two Basie-band veterans makes it a quietly rewarding hard-bop side.
