The record

A late-'50s Bethlehem date that leans on Basie-band muscle -- Newman, Coker, Fowlkes and Pierce all lending big-band shorthand to a small-group blues session. Vinson's alto bite and shouting vocals carry the same jump-blues wit that made him a draw a decade earlier, here filtered through a tighter, swinging combo format.

Session personnel

  • Charlie Fowlkes — baritone saxophone
  • Eddie Jones — bass
  • Nat Pierce — piano
  • Henry Coker — trombone
  • Joe Newman — trumpet
  • Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson — vocals, alto saxophone
