The record
Co-led with Gigi Gryce, this octet piles horn and tuba voicings into dense charts that push Byrd's writing beyond the trumpet chair. Julius Watkins' french horn thickens the ensemble into something closer to chamber brass than a straight quintet blow.

Pressings
The earliest we list is the 1957 US Columbia mono, CL 998, with a Canadian pressing on the same number and a US promo alongside it. Europe took it that year on Philips -- BBL 7210 in Britain, P 07.283 L in France. For a clean later copy the 1977 Japanese CBS/Sony mono, 15AP 552, is the one to find; a 1989 Spanish Fresh Sound, FSR-686, and a 2007 Columbia reissue of CL 998 are the fallbacks.
