The record
Gershwin's score gets a plush West Coast reading, Carroll's clear, cabaret-honed voice floating over Previn's piano and a rotating rhythm section of top studio players. Elegant rather than bluesy, it's a late-'50s vocal take on Catfish Row filtered through Hollywood polish.
