The record
A curious detour for the Basie band, with Oliver Nelson's arrangements pushing the orchestra into percussion-heavy, Africa-inspired territory alongside flute, marimba, and harmonica textures rarely heard in the book. Freddie Green's rhythm guitar anchors things even as the surrounding sound reaches well outside the swing tradition Basie built his name on.
