The record
Recorded in the brief Mercury/Philips window before Miles Davis came calling, this quintet date rides a blues-soaked groove -- Nat's cornet and Junior Mance's rolling piano pointing toward the soul-jazz sound still to come.
Session personnel
- Sam Jones — bass
- Nat Adderley — cornet
- Jimmy Cobb — drums
- Junior Mance — piano
- Cannonball Adderley — saxophone
Contemporary reception
No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.
Pressings
Only three pressings are on file and all date from 1961. The earliest is the US Mercury MG 20616 in mono; a mono promo of the same number is also listed, and the UK issue is Mercury MMC 14081, likewise mono. No stereo copy and no reissue appears in our data at all, so a clean 1961 Mercury mono is realistically the only thing a buyer is choosing between.
