The record
A quietly inventive quartet date led by the guitarist best known for his work with Tristano and Konitz, here stretching out in a straighter swing setting with Hinton and Johnson locking in a supple, conversational pulse. Ackers' piano adds harmonic color without crowding Bauer's clean, unhurried lines -- a low-key showcase for one of the era's most literate guitarists.
