Recorded across three days in late 1960, this quartet finds Pepper stretching past cool-school restraint into rawer, more urgent territory. Dolo Coker and Frank Butler don't let up, and the leader answers with some of his most exposed playing for Contemporary.

The earliest copies we list are all 1963: Contemporary mono M3607 and stereo S7607 from Canada, a US M3607 that shows a deep groove but appears only as promo and test pressing, and the British issues, mono LAC 553 and stereo SCA 553. Contemporary repressed S7607 in 1973. For a modern copy, Analogue Productions cut AJAZ 7607 at 45 RPM in 2003, and Craft's 2024 CR00761 is the current 180g.
