The record

A nine-piece date scored with the same harmonic daring as Hill's trio work, its brass and reeds -- tuba, french horn, english horn among them -- opening onto orchestral colors rarely heard on Blue Note. Shelved for decades before its release, it stands as one of the era's most ambitious large-ensemble statements from the pianist-composer.

  • Lenny White — drums
  • Robert Northern — french horn
  • Andrew Hill — piano
  • Joe Farrell — soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, alto flute, bass clarinet, english horn
  • Julian Priester — trombone
