The record
Coleman Hawkins, tenor's founding elder, sits alongside an apprentice Coltrane on this rare full-horn date, both threading stop-start voicings meant to trip up the unwary. Blakey's press rolls and that startled count-off show how much room the leader gave his band to breathe.

Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1957 Riverside RLP 12-242 in mono. Stereo arrives the following year as RLP 1102, listed with a deep groove, and the 1958 mono repressings of 12-242 carry one too. The shorter Riverside numbers that follow -- 242, 9242, RLP 12-9242 -- are mid-sixties reissues, so do not read them as early copies. OJC-084 has covered the record since 1983. Analogue Productions cut the stereo at 45 RPM as AJAZ 1102 in 2004 and came back to the mono RLP-12-242 in 2024.
