The record
A drummerless chamber session where clarinet, guitar, and bass trade lines with folk-like plainness, Giuffre stripping jazz down to counterpoint and breath. Jim Hall's understated comping already hints at the quiet inventiveness he'd carry through decades of trio work.

"THE JIMMY GIUFFRE 3"--Atlantic 1254 (1-12" LP) Clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre (who also sports a baritone and tenor sax on various sessions here) gets going with a cozy trio (bass and guitar) on this Atlantic issue featuring 9 intimate, and vivid folk-blues jazz drawings. The instrumental make-up of the group is remarkably well suited for this approach, and much of the excellence of these pressings is the deceptively simple arrangements coming from Giuffre's ingenuity. An outstanding jazz presentation offering a constant stream of refreshing ideas. Giuffre's rapidly growing following will be wild about this one.

We hold no US original-era LP for this title -- the 1960 Atlantic 1254 is already listed as a reissue. The earliest copies here are all 1957: a Canadian mono AT 1254, a Danish 1254 in a laminated sleeve, and an Italian pressing on Music showing deep groove. UK buyers will meet London's LTZ-K15130 from 1958. The modern option is Jazz Images' 2018 mono gatefold, 37107.
