The record
Named for a Staple Singers civil-rights song, this set rides Zawinul's electric-piano color right before the band's commercial breakthrough. Gospel undertow and grit share the same pocket start to finish.
Session personnel
- Cannonball Adderley — alto saxophone
- Victor Gaskin — bass
- Nat Adderley — cornet
- Roy McCurdy — drums
- Joe Zawinul — piano, electric piano
Contemporary reception
No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.
Pressings
Both mixes date from 1966: mono is T-2617, stereo ST-2617, and each was struck at more than one Capitol plant -- Los Angeles, Jacksonville and Scranton all show up on mono. The Los Angeles mono is the earliest we list. The UK followed in 1967 on the same two numbers. Beyond a 1968 Japanese red-vinyl stereo, CP-8217, we hold no reissue at all, so a clean US copy is the practical target.
