The record
Four conga players -- Chief Bey, Montego Joe, Robert Crowder and Garvin Masseaux -- plus shekere, cowbell, xylophone and Solomon G. Ilori's talking drum and penny whistle: percussion is the architecture here, not the seasoning. Hosea Taylor's alto and flute and guitars from Jay Berliner and Ilori ride on top, with Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass. Blue Note 4136, 1963, liner notes by Oladejo Okediji.
