The record
Vanguard handed him a rare leader date near the close of the '50s trio-piano wave, with the singer's-pianist reputation set aside for a session. The results are understated and swinging, built on restraint rather than display.
Contemporary reception
No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.
Pressings
Thin on the ground. The earliest pressing on file here is the 1957 US Vanguard VRS 8512; an undated US reissue of the same number also turns up, so read the labels before you pay for an early copy. The UK issue came in 1958 on Vanguard Jazz Showcase PPL 11016, and Japan's limited mono KIJJ 12 followed in 1991. Nothing audiophile is listed.
