The record

Recorded in December 1956 with Arthur Lyman's vibraphone and August Colon's bongos framing Denny's piano, this is the session that named exotica itself. Hushed, humid, and faux-Polynesian by design, it set the mold Liberty kept pressing for years.

Session personnel

  • John Kramer — bass
  • August Colon — bongos [bongoes]
  • Martin Denny — piano
  • Arthur Lyman — vibraphone [vibes]

Pressings

The earliest copies on file are 1957 Liberty monos, all numbered LRP 3034 and separated only by plant -- Hollywood, Indianapolis, Scranton, plus a Transistorized variant. Stereo arrives later, as LST 7034 in 1959, so a stereo copy sits at least two years behind the earliest mono here. Both numbers repress through 1960, with a stereo repress listed as late as 1966. Abroad, New Zealand issued LBY.1031-M and London Records a 10-inch UK pressing, HB-U 1079.
