Percussion drives the concept on this United Artists date, with charts pushing drum features toward orchestral scale rather than simple rhythm showcase. An early-'60s stretch for a writer whose gift for voicing rarely got this much room.
Contemporary reception
"DRUM FEAST" -- Manny Albam and His Orchestra -- United Artists UAS 6079 Now jazz and percussion. Experimenter Albam has concocted a flavorful "menu" of original percussion compositions each of which puts forth the merits of a particular instrument (or instruments). For instance, there's "Cymbal Soup," "Egg Foo Gong," "Rare Snare," "Traps Suzettes." It all culminates in a tasty combination dish fittingly titled "A Sip Of Drum Bouie." Jazz? . . . Well. But it's great stuff for the stereo bugs.
