The record
A trio date from Savoy's mid-'50s heyday, with Marshall's rounded tone and Clarke's brushwork giving the young pianist room to stretch out. Coates would later become a Bill Evans devotee and Woody Herman sideman, but here he's still finding his own voice, unhurried and lyrical.
