The record

The drummerless Giuffre 3 with Bob Brookmeyer and Jim Hall -- folk-tinged chamber jazz sketched in clarinet, valve trombone, and guitar.

Contemporary reception

Cash Boxpublic domain

An untiring experimenter, the work that Giuffre has accomplished with this unconventional, rhythmless trio is climaxed in the “Western Suite,” a four-part, classically-built suite that is written down for the most part but has some improvisation. The recording requires concentrated listening and it’s worth the effort, for Giuffre has many rewarding things to say for jazz. Side two contains extended readings of two jazz standards which fit into the same mood -- “Topsy” and “Blue Monk.”
