Early-1923 sides from Bessie Smith's first Columbia year, when her voice was already commanding enough to anchor the label's blues catalogue. A rotating cast of accompanists -- Fletcher Henderson among them -- frames her phrasing with the loose, unhurried backing typical of these formative studio dates.
