The record
Ellington's songbook gets a patient reading here, Cedar Walton's piano and the Jones-Higgins rhythm team giving the flugelhorn room to phrase like it's telling a story. Inner City caught a road-tested unit at ease, not chasing the tribute-album formula so much as living inside it.
